With marriage comes a lot of responsibility. Every married couple strives to have an
intimate, loving spousal relationship, while maintaining some sort of control over
their family size based on their personal situations. Although artificial
contraceptives appear to be a couple’s only option for controlling fertility, these can
actually be very harmful to a couple’s relationship and a woman’s body. The Billings
method however, is a safe, accurate method that will bond couples while giving
them the confidence to plan their families.
The Billings Method was founded in 1953 by John and Evlyn Billings and is one of
the chosen methods of Natural Family Planning. It is the preferred method for
Trinidad because of its history here, as well as its simplicity and accuracy. People
often confuse the authentic method with its copycats, which can result in failure of
desired result for a couple. Not to be confused with the rhythm or counting
methods, the Billings method has high success rates when followed accurately.
Many people hear the word Billings and instantly think abstinence, but this method
is in fact, quite the opposite. It encourages couples to take advantage of infertile
periods during a woman’s cycle since it recognizes the importance of intimacy
between couples in marriage. On the other hand, during the short fertile periods in a
woman’s cycle, when a couple that has decided to postpone or avoid pregnancy for
specific reasons, must abstain, this time of self-control causes the couple to grow
extremely strong together, since the decision is mutual and agreed upon by both the
husband and wife. The couple works together to achieve the same outcome. The
husband learns to understand the complex beauty of his wife’s body and becomes in
tune in order to make responsible decisions with her. He learns to value her body as
a life-giving gift instead of something that is one dimensional and regarded as solely
pleasure-giving.
Unlike other artificial methods, the Billings method creates discussion between
husband and wife about their family size and future plans. This is an extremely
significant part of a couple’s journey that tends to be eliminated from most modern
marriages today. Each time couples engage in this valuable discussion, it causes
them to reevaluate their current decisions about family size, which is necessary due
to ever changing circumstances in a marriage.
The Billings Method is also completely natural and hormone/chemical free as well
as economically inexpensive. Couples using this method do not have to worry about
spending money as well any dangerous or harmful side effects for the woman. The
method relies simply on observation of the body’s natural signs. Women can also
use this method to be in tune with their health, and can detect any abnormalities
from these observations. Perhaps the reason most doctors don’t recommend
Billing’s is because they don’t benefit financially from it, combined with the fact that
they confuse it with other failed methods like the rhythm and counting.
Married couples that use this method have a divorce rate of 0.2% as opposed to
contracepting couples that have an increasing rate of more than 50%. Once
followed accurately studies have shown that out of a wide range of couples that
wanted to avoid pregnancy only 0.5% failed. On the other hand, couples trying to
achieve pregnancy were 70% successful. After seeing the endless benefits of this
method, it is hard to imagine that anyone would be unwilling to give it a try!
